11 Web Series You Should Be Watching

Today, entertainment is at its best but not at the movies and not on television, either. Instead, viewers are going crazy over shows streamed on the internet; they’re called web series and you’d be surprised what a  web series really is. A web series is a show that requires the internet to watch unlike satellite and cable, you need wifi to watch these shows. Some require monthly subscriptions and others are entirely free.

But what makes this list different, you ask? Well, for one- it may surprise you to learn what qualifies as a web show and two- you may have not even heard of these titles and who knows, you might find your next obsession on this list. The list varies from super popular to not-so-popular but all of them are worthy of this read through because how else would these pieces of entertainment be noticed, if you don’t, at the very least, scan through them?

But on IMDb they’re called ‘TV- Series’. My friend, the term web series is still on the rise and there isn’t a category for them yet on that particular site. See? You learned something and haven’t even gotten to the list yet! Here are eleven shows everyone is talking about and you should be watching.
(These shows have been verified by IMDb).

11. Orange is the New Black

Let’s start with the obvious, shall we? Orange is the New Black has been setting records everywhere but it’s also quite possibly the first web show that has given streaming a good name. Taking place in a fictional women’s prison, Piper Chapman finds a way to survive both physically and emotionally during her sentence. The show also focuses on issues that are currently causing controversy regarding inmate treatment. Starring: Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox and Taryn Manning

10. Wendy

This one is not so popular but you may recognize some faces, if you’re in your teens. Wendy is an imaginative modern day, retelling of Peter Pan but from Wendy’s perspective. This one is short and sweet as opposed to the hour long drama. We’re talking five- minute sweet. The mystery is captivating, the music is compelling and the story is very driven. You’ll find yourself connecting the original characters and plots only to find yourself questioning what is actually happening. It is a bit on the teen side but it’s only five minutes, give it shot. Starring: Meghan Martin, Tyler Blackburn, David Cane and Rachel DiPillo.

9. 11.22.63

11.22.63 is an edge of your seat thriller that involves time travel. If you could to change history, would you? Jake Epping travels back in time to stop the assassination of JFK but runs into some problems along the way because obviously, every time traveler will- duh! The show has raised some eyebrows and rehashes the conspiracy theories surrounding the death of the former president but still worth your time starring James Franco and written by Stephen King and produced by JJ Abrams. How could you go wrong? Starring: James Franco, Sarah Gadon, Chris Cooper, George MacKay and Josh Duhamel

8. Nightwing: The Series

This one has been around for a while but still worth the watch- even though it wasn’t renewed but the makers continue to make short super hero films. Dick Grayson, the former Robin of Gotham City, dawns the mask of Nightwing for the first time without Batman. For the superhero fan, this series may just wet your whistle combining the grittiness of The Dark Knight with the storytelling in the style of Arrow. Join the superhero club and start watching some action! Starring: Danny Shepherd, Bob Lee Dysinger and Stephen Manley.

7. Mortal Kombat: Legacy

This too has been around for a while but still done very well and is still currently airing. Most of us are familiar with Mortal Kombat because the video games have been around for such a long time but this is way better than the movie we all got back in the 90’s. It sets as a prequel to the games and explores the backgrounds of multiple characters. Even if you’re not a fan of MK, the show stars some recognizable faces and features some pretty impressive action scenes. Starring:  Edward Mayo, Casper Van Dien, Ian Anthony Dale and Samantha Jo.

6. Beautiful Fools

Beautiful Fools is one of those that takes a bit of an open mind to watch as its story is more on the raw side and there isn’t much action, in fact there is none. Instead, BFS focuses on a British screw up who is drowning in his problems of alcoholism while still trying to get his life back on track after his sudden break up. Unlike the fast paced shows listed previously, this one slows it down a notch but still worth a try. Starring: Dominic Best, Heather Higginbotham and Zach Baz.

5. Fox

This one is more for teens and young adults but the plot is still alluring. It’s about dreams and how they reflect your reality; what if dreams are real? Fox, the infamous dream girl has a tendency to keep secrets and those secrets involve the truth of dreams. The show will make you think and give you whiplash by the end of the season, making you actually question what a dream actually is. The production value grows as the season proceeds, so you can totally see why it’s making a name for itself- plus, despite its fantasy aspect it still brings it home while bringing up such a controversial issue of same-sex acceptance and there’s a pretty impressive one shot action scene too because who doesn’t want to watch a girl kick ass? Starring: Monroe Hayden, Allyson Moyer, Michael Lozano and Hunter Tabiendo.

4. Vag Magazine

Unlike the previous shows, this one is funny! It goes behind the scenes of a feminist magazine and stars SNL star, Kate McKinnon. So, yeah it’s pretty funny. Consider it Brides Maids meets The Devil Wears Prada without Meryl. Only one season was made but still worth watching as each episode is only 5 minutes and there are only 6 episodes total. So get your fem on and watch some vag… magazine. Get your head out of the gutter. Starring: Sarah Claspell, Nicole Drespel, Jocelyn Guest and Kate McKinnon

3. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn

This one kicks it up a notch with the action and adventure. Although this one premiered years ago, according to IMDb ratings, it beats the current Nightfall out of the park. Halo fans may enjoy this more so than any other live action series that have since premiered, as it focuses on teenagers who are undergoing training to protect the Covenant. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Maybe you should give it a try then? Xbox fans can watch a space adventure they’re familiar with and those who have never played the games can enjoy it too as it features impressive special effects and interesting characters. Since premiering, the episodes have been collected together to create a movie so no episode jumping. Starring: Anna Popplewell, Thom Green, Daniel Cudmore and Enisha Brewster

Rent or buy on DVD and Blu-ray

2. Powers

Since we’re in the video game section, let’s bring up Powers which is Playstation’s original series that focuses on an investigator who was once a superhero but had his powers taken away from him. Set in a fictional world where humans and super humans exist, the show has raised a few eyebrows and has even been green lit for a second season. The problem with this series is you have to have a Playstation account to watch it. It’s exclusive for PS players. Starring: Sharlto Copley, Susan Heyward, Noah Taylor and Eddie Izzard

  1. Mozart in the Jungle

Quite possibly the show that has been turning heads since Orange is the New Black, Amazon released one of many shows and this one is about what happens backstage of a symphony. You’d think it would be boring but it actually isn’t. Trust me. Its Golden Globe should prove it is reputable. You have to have an Amazon Prime account to watch for free or use the free trial to catch up and perhaps check out other shows the company has produced. Starring: Gael Garcia Bernal, Lola Kirke, Saffron Burrows and Bernadette Peters.
